Bible Study 7/19

- kfc: amazing, I looked back and we haven't had it in a while.

Last week, Paul talked about being single and being married. Whichever condition you're in, you should remain content. He gives special encouragement to the singles; it is his opinion that it is actually a blessing to remain single because one doesn't have to divide his/her devotion between family and God. He can better focus on God and maintain an eternal perspective on life. Ultimately, Paul encourages all of us (no matter our condition) to keep an eternal perspective and that marriage nor wealth nor joy nor sorrow should detract us from that.

We will have a study this week - be on time! Jason will be around this week - since he and I will be cooking.

Bible Study 6/14

- japanese curry, yum!

Although many things are permissible, it doesn't mean it's beneficial for us to do it. We must have discernment to know that doing some of these things (i.e. drinking, smoking, eating japanese curry) may end up mastering us. One thing that Paul does make clear in the last study is that sexual immorality is not one of these permissible things. In fact, Paul tells us to flee from sexual immorality because it's a sin against our own bodies. The body is the temple for the holy spirit and we are joined with Jesus Christ in body and spirit, and committing sexual immorality only pollutes that body.

We will have bible study this week. Jason and I will bring food.

Bible Study 6/7

- shanghainese food

So what did we learn last week? We learned to not sue each other. We live in a litigious society today and can probably relate to some of the things going on at the Corinthian church. It is poor witness for two brothers to sue each other for certain disputes (such as property disputes) because it shows disunity and how foolish they look when they have to go to secular judges whom have no spiritual wisdom. Paul reminds the reader that the saints have the ability and wisdom to judge in the end times because we have access to the true wisdom of God, thus we should be able to resolve these disputes within the church.

We will continue with I Corinthians 5 this week. Sterling and Tak will bring dinner.

Bible Study 5/24

- chinese food

While Paul calls the Corinthian church to remove sin from their midst in the last study. He clarifies his position further that this does not apply to non-believers. We, as disciples, need to engage with people outside the body. Otherwise, how can we spread the gospel? We must be in the world, but not of the world. Remember that even Jesus rebuked the pharisees and his own disciples, and ultimately holding them to a higher standard. Meanwhile, he engaged the prostitutes and tax collectors with love to bring them salvation.

We will have a study this week. Jason and I will bring food.

Bible Study 5/17

- dumplings

Yes, dumplings ARE delicious.

Last week, we started on I Corinthians chapter 5, where Paul teaches us that we need to remove sin from our lives. This applies to all of us on a personal level and also in the context of the body. In our personal lives, we need to proactively remove sin from our lives through accountability, prayer, breaking bad life patterns, etc. On a church level, Paul tells us not to simply look the other way when a brother/sister sins. Instead we should look to encourage change and repentance, and remove them from the body if necessary.

We will finish off chapter 5 this week. Grace and Sterling will cook.

Bible Study 5/10

So we're a little behind on our Bible studies now. On a more positive note, Warriors made it to the second round. Although, they just lost game 1...sigh.

We will have a Bible study this week, and Grace & Jason will bring food.

Monday, April 30, 2007

Bible Study 4/5

- I'll leave it to the reader to figure out what we ate last week. Here's a clue.

Last week, we learned that those who minister are servants of God and that they are stewards of God's good news. A key requirement for a person doing ministry is that he/she must be trustworthy, faithful, and reliable. Paul also explains that God is the only one that will judge the true motives and quality of the ministries, so it is irrelevant to validated by men. I know that it is easier said than done, as I also struggle with shyness and fear of rejection. But it is important to challenge ourselves to stretch beyond these struggles.

This week's small group is special. For those here last week, you know what I'm talking about. :) For those who weren't here, come find out. We will also have our usual study this week. Nate and I will "cook".

Monday, March 26, 2007

Bible Study 3/29

We went to Shabuway last week instead of the bible study, we ate a lot of meat. Look at that meat, doesn't Jason look full? Yum!

We will make up our study this week. Jason & Sterling will be slated to cook again.

Monday, March 19, 2007

Bible Study 3/22

- SFC (Safeway Fried Chicken)

I'm not feeling so well, so here's a copy and paste of Josh's summary.

We are the temple of God whom the Holy Spirit dwell. We must live in holiness and set apart. All ministry is sacred. Ministry is the work of Christ in people and it is holy and spiritual. Although it is unseen, it is to be honored and not destroyed. True wisdom is of God and it is foolish before the world. The wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. So we do not boast in the world’s wisdom but remain fools before the world because all things belong to us. The church will be given all things to be inherited from God and King Jesus. We belong to our King Jesus in allegiance and unity. We belong to God.

Paul will tells us more this week. Jason and Sterling will bring food.

Monday, March 12, 2007

Bible Study 3/15

- beef shoulders

We didn't have a study last week - we watched Survivor: Fiji, CSI, and Prison Break instead. Yauman is no Yul.

We will have a Bible study this week. Grace and Niki will bring food.

Monday, March 05, 2007

Bible Study 3/8

- shrimp pasta

BREAKING NEWS! We did not have _KFC_ last week! Haha.

Last week, we learned that we must root our ministries based on Jesus Christ and build upon His foundation. God will test us on the quality of our works. Our discussion led us to conclude that our works are considered good quality based on whether our intentions are truly for the Kingdom and whether we're glorifying God. An equally important point that we discussed is that even if a Christian does works for his selfish reasons, his work will not deemed to be good quality but will still be saved as a result of God's grace. Good stuff.

We will continue with Corinthians this week. Jeremy and Nate will bring food.

Bible Study 3/1

- KFC

Do you guys know the significance of the stock chart above? If you guessed that Yum! Brands owns KFC, then you're right! I will leave it as an exercise to the readers to figure out how they've been doing so well.

So last week, Paul talks more about the divisions within the Corinthian church and rebukes the Corinthian believers for behaving in this way. Instead of being "of Paul" or "of Apollos", the believers should look at the bigger picture. Both Paul and Apollos had a single purpose to grow the gospel and provided an environment growth, and God ultimately causes the actual spiritual growth through the Holy Spirit. The point is that despite their different roles, they had a unified purpose of growing the Kingdom.

We have Bible study this week; Jason and I will bring food. Maybe I should buy some shares of YUM while I'm at it. :)

Monday, February 19, 2007

Bible Study 2/22

- cup cakes & tortilla soup

Whew, finally got myself back on the blog. We had a prayer small group last week, where we got a chance to share our praises and struggles with God and also prayed for James, Jeff, and Justin who got baptized this past Sunday! I'm looking forward to this week's study as we continue with I Corinthians. Grace & Sterling will bring food.

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Bible Study 2/2

- Costco pizza

God chooses the weak and foolish of the world to shame those who are wise and mighty. He does this because they cannot boast in their own abilities, rather they will boast in God. Do we boast in our own abilities? Or do we boast in the Lord who gave us our talents and ultimately saved us in spite of us.

Onwards with Corinthians this week. Grace and Nate will bring dinner.

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Bible Study 1/25

- chinese

Paul exhorts the Corinthian believers to break down the divisions within the church. He urges them to be of one mind and body in Christ because it is far more important than an opinion based on some special wisdom or preference. This is very applicable today as we need to stay unified despite the fact that we're bombarded more and more by our environment and culture.

We will continue with Corinthians this week. Please be on time. Sterling and Tim will bring dinner.

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Bible Study 1/18

- boston market

Pastor Josh gave us a detailed overview of the background behind the I & II Corinthians last week. We will be starting the Corinthians study this week. Jeremy and I will bring food.

Monday, January 08, 2007

Bible Study 1/11

- KFC

We sat around a bucket of chicken as Jason told us an epic tale of romance, adventure, and treasure. Good times.

We will be starting a new series this week - same time, same place. Grace and Jason will bring food.

Monday, January 01, 2007

Bible Study 1/4

- chicken mcnuggets, fries, brownie bites

In our last study, we see that Paul is convicted to preach the gospel to those who have not heard as he travels from area to area to minister to others. He also touches on the issues of sharing material blessings and unity within the body. All these things are applicable to this day.

We will have the first study of the year - same time, same place as last year. Niki and Sterling will bring food.
